Yet again, the good old British summer weather dominated the lead up to the 3rd round of the D1RC Drift Series, back to back rain forecast for a fortnight but then, as if someone was watching over us, a chink in the wet stuff appeared for just 24 hours - but it was the right 24 hours! Colchester was dry, sunny and warm, if a little windy. All that made for good drift conditions although a few drivers tried removing any large wings to minimise the adverse impact of side winds across the circuit that can either prevent a drift initiating or hold a drift out when not wanted – it's all part of the skill set you need to take part in D1RC!
And what a turnout it was, with all the usual suspects plus new faces, old returning faces, spectators (several of which have vowed to take part in the next round at Snetterton on 8 July) and several photographers, all making up a great atmosphere for some serious fun, aka another D1RC Drift Series round! In the Pro Class it was yours truly who set the bar in qualifying with a double 90 top score using my TC-Drift Evo, chased by Iceman Sissons and Simon Landgrebe with his TC-FD, two HPI Team drivers in the top 3 with everyone on the superb HPI T-Drift #4406 control tyres. In the Pro Class finals it was Simon's turn to pip me to 3rd spot, with myself 4th, Steve Gravett 2nd and Iceman stealing yet another win. We will have him next round! In Club Class it was Matt Tunks who poled with Andy Brunton and Darcy Meadows taking 2nd & 3rd slots. In their final it was surprise winner Rhys Maskell who took top honours, surprise only because that slot has eluded him for so long, finally conquering rostrum nerves and showing that he can now do in the finals what he has long done in the practice sessions – awesome! Andy and Matt took 2nd and 3rd place cut glass trophies and, of course, those very welcome HPI prizes, as did all the podium finishers in both classes. And so the end to another superb D1RC drift event, supported by HPI Europe, ClearCut Trophies, Radio Race Car International, Touge Speed Shop and, of course, Colchester MCC. Thanks everyone and look forward to seeing you at Snetterton for round 4.
