Check out the new macho addition to the Savage
line-up! The Savage XL is the super-large, extra-tough and
supremely powerful bigger brother to the Savage monster trucks.
With a longer wheelbase, wider stance and huge 5.9cc (.36 cubic
inch) engine, the Savage XL is ready to rock and roll right out of
the box! We were looking to expand the Savage range of monster
trucks and had to consider what would capture the imagination and
hearts of legions of HPI Savage fans. HPI designers settled on a
larger, fun-oriented version of the Savage with massive great
tyres, a giant chunky bodyshell and powered by the biggest engine
ever offered in a production Savage monster truck. The end result
is the Savage XL!
The Savage XL definitely looks the part of the massive monster
truck! The extended wheelbase is the perfect evolution of the
Savage design, and the extended chassis and larger tyres are a
perfect match for the new, bigger ‘Gigante’ bodyshell!
The wide front grille and huge headlights of the XL bodyshell merge
with the flared wheel arches front and rear for a huge ‘wow
factor’, adding to the impression of huge size and strength!
The tall, wide Terra Pin tyres fit the bodyshell perfectly for a
fantastic scale look that’s sure to intimidate the opposition
at your local bashing arena! Finally, while the new 8-hole wheels
look huge, they use a standard 17mm hex hub so it’s easy to
change the look and style of the XL as often as you like! The
Savage XL isn’t all just looking great, but we went all-out
to make sure it looks as impressive as it performs!
Size does matter...
Bigger in every dimension than the Savage X trucks that stand
next to it, the XL is taller, longer and wider, with a longer
wheelbase, more ground clearance and tyres nearly 7 inches across!
It’s based on the practically indestructible Savage X chassis
but features even more durability upgrades like 3mm TVP plates and
engine mount, machine-cut differential ring and pinion bevel gears,
steel spur gear, heavy duty clutchbell, extra heavy-duty dogbones,
new larger diff outdrives and axles, machined brake hub, dual fibre
disk brakes and much more! Read on to find out more about the

To get the long wheelbase of the Savage XL, HPI designers settled
on using an all-new extended TVP (Twin Vertical Plate) chassis that
is made from 3mm thick 6061 aluminium. 6061-series aluminium is
light and strong and provides the strength for stretching the
Savage platform to its limits! The chassis features the cool Savage
‘X’ styling, plus a few extra design features etched
into the chassis to really make it stand out! The engine is fitted
to a one-piece engine mount which is then firmly attached to a 3mm
extra thick engine mounting plate that is mounted between the TVP
chassis. These are the thickest standard TVP and engine plate parts
ever used on a Savage monster truck, and can easily withstand the
torque of the massive Nitro Star K5.9 engine, plus anything else
you can throw at the truck.

New Terra Pin tyres stand tall, at 170mm (nearly 7 inches across!)
to soak up ruts, bumps, rough landings and more! The tough spike
pattern makes the Terra Pins great in grass and loose dirt, while
the chevron centre pattern give it good directional stability while
on the harder stuff. The tall sidewalls provide extra shock
absorption and allow the tyres to grip extremely as they roll over
obstacles. Speaking of obstacles, they won’t stand a chance
as the Terra Pins roll over them!
The Savage XL features the Savage 3-speed transmission to get the
most out of the huge torque from the K5.9 engine. This gives you
the best acceleration and top speed possible, getting all the power
efficiently to the ground for maximum fun and enjoyment! The
transmission is fully adjustable, too, so you can choose how early
or late the XL will shift into higher gear!
Wider Stance &
17mm Hex Hubs
To widen the stance of the Savage chassis, the XL uses aluminium
extending axles with 17mm hex hubs. These are lightweight and
tough, and fit any 17mm hex monster truck or truggy type wheel, so
your collection of monster truck wheels are perfectly usable!
Serrated steel wheel nuts grip the plastic of the wheels to keep
them locked in place, making sure that you’ll never see a
wheel bouncing past your truck!
The XL features all-new uprights designed for the larger tyres and
weight of this massive beast, and HPI designers have made these
parts standard across the Savage X range for even better durability
for all Savage X trucks! Beefier parts means the truck can take far
more abuse and punishment, giving you plenty of big-air thrills
before a parts breakages forces you to take a break. These are the
types of running changes HPI customers are used to, and why Savage
owners keep coming back for more and more!
The Savage XL continues the run of tough, overbuilt, solid monster
trucks: a wide range of durability options, plus several new
drivetrain parts, are a standard part of the Savage XL’s
arsenal of tricks. Machined diff ring and pinion bevel gears easily
take the power of 5.9cc of nitro-burning mayhem, alloy diff cases
and 4-gear diffs with new larger diff outdrives and axles round out
the ultra-strong differentials, while extra heavy-duty dogbones get
the power to both ends and all four wheels with ease.
Getting the power to the dogbones are larger, thicker and stronger
diff outdrive cups. These machined steel outdrives can take the
punishment of the suspension movement and the power of the K5.9
engine to get you through the toughest driving conditions and
terrain with no problems!
New extra-thick, super duty dogbones provide the insurance you'll
want when you take the XL way off-road and into rough country! The
thicker diameter, larger ends and sleek black anodizing add up to
all the assurance you'll want that the drivetrain won't let you
down when the going gets tough! You'll be able to commit the full
power of the K5.9 engine to the ground without worrying about
drivetrain breakages or anything else!
A machined steel 52T spur gear is the perfect match for the
horsepower of the Nitro Star K5.9 engine. With the heavy duty
vented clutchbell spinning the spur gear, you get a huge amount of
drivetrain protection with gears that won't strip, melt or break!
You'll have security and peace of mind that your truck will not
only perform superbly, but last as long as possible in the roughest
of terrain and conditions!
The Savage XL uses a new 3-shoe aluminium clutch to get the power
from the engine into the drivetrain. Using a unique, new blend of
aluminium, the clutch shoes will resist wear, not be affected by
engine heat and last for a very long time. There's no more secure
way to get the power to the ground!
High Torque Metal
Gear Steering Servo
HPI designers settled on a super-strong, extra-tough high torque
metal gear servo. With nearly 9kg of force per centimeter (that's
126psi!), the SF-5 will get those tall Terra Pins turning easily at
any speed! There's no need to upgrade the servo for anything else -
this baby's got it all! With the bellcrank steering and built-in
servo saver, you can be sure that the SF-5 will be fully protected
against crash damage or bad landings, too!
6v NiMH Receiver
Pack and Charger
To make sure the servos have all the power they need and then some,
we're throwing in an HPI 1200mAh NiMH battery pack! This
rechargeable pack even includes a convenient wall charger so you
can make sure that the XL is always ready to rumble! You don't even
need to take the pack out of the truck to charge it - just use the
convenient charging jack built into the radio box and you'll be
ready to go in no time!
All this power and durability gets you nowhere unless the truck is
easy to drive and can get you through the rough stuff, so HPI
designers made sure that the Savage XL can take everything you can
through it at and come through handling like a champ! The first
thing that hits the ground are the huge HPI Terra Pin tyres, which
feature a tall sidewall, expanding carcass cross-section and tough
spikes to rip through grass and loose dirt. The tall tyres make
handling the rough stuff easy, and the ground clearance of better
than 7cm (over 3 inches) gets you over any obstacles with room to
spare! In addition to the friendlier handling, the XL can handle
even rougher terrain than the rest of the Savage monster trucks
because its massive size. The Savage XL is more forgiving in
extreme terrain than other Savage trucks, making it easier to
control and more forgiving in the most terrifying conditions!
Savage big-block monster trucks are legendary for their toughness
in the most extreme conditions and stunts, and the XL goes even
further. With all-new suspension and drivetrain parts designed to
take the load of the biggest-ever Nitro Star engine, the Savage XL
has what it takes to make it last! The Savage XL has loads of
features that make it easier to drive than shorter-wheelbase
monster trucks, while making it tougher and more durable for
jumping and in off-road conditions. Tall all-terrain tyres, 8
shocks and plush double-wishbone suspension combine for reliable
and predictable handling. Add in the new heavy duty suspension
parts, strong bracing points and the famous Savage durability of
the standard parts and you get one tough machine! Like the rest of
the Savage range, the XL uses a total of 8 oil-filled, long-stroke,
coil over shocks to handle the suspension duties. Mounted at the
bottom to the suspension arms and at the top to Savage X-style
shock towers, the shocks can be easily adjusted to vary their
position to suit your driving style or terrain. With easy ride
height adjustment, you’ll be able to set up the XL low for
racing or high speed runs, or quickly raise it for cruising over
the rough stuff! With heavy-duty bracing of all suspension parts,
the hits can just keep on coming. Tough steel hinge pins and
aluminium braces work with the high-impact nylon of the skid
plates, bumpers and lower suspension parts to give the Savage XL a
rock-solid foundation for ultimate mayhem! Experience for yourself
the thrills of wild bashing sessions at top speed, while not having
to worry about crash damage or parts failure – it’s
always a good time with the Savage XL! Just like the other Savage
monster trucks, the XL uses double wishbone suspension to get the
power to the ground and soak up jumps and more. With lightweight
Savage X-type suspension arms, tough moulded upper links and
super-tough hardware you have the peace of mind that comes with
having control of the toughest monster truck around!
At the heart of the Savage XL is the all-new, monstrous Nitro
Star K5.9 engine! This 5.9cc (.36 cubic inch) powerplant gives the
XL loads of torque for turning the giant tyres, giving the truck
the muscle to power over obstacles and through the toughest terrain
and conditions. The K5.9 engine delivers the muscle and grunt that
you’ll want for powering the Savage XL over any type of
terrain and through any obstacle! The low powerband supplies the
torque for getting the XL up to speed fast, and the curved manifold
and aluminium tuned pipe get the most power out of the engine. The
K5.9 is also fitted with a Roto-Start 2 for easy starting, a vented
heavy-duty clutchbell and aluminium 3-shoe clutch for tough and
reliable power transfer and a giant heatsink head so you
won’t have to worry about overheating!
With a curved rear-exhaust manifold directing exhaust gases to the
shiny aluminium 2-chamber tuned pipe, the specialized K5.9 exhaust
system produces loads of horsepower that just demands to be used!
The exhaust system is spring-loaded to enable it to withstand the
brutal landings of big-air jumps and driving over any type of
terrain, and is designed just for the K5.9 engine to produce
maximum punch and monstrous top speeds!
With true ABC construction (Aluminium case, Brass Chrome-plated
piston and cylinder), the Nitro Star K5.9 delivers massive torque
and horsepower and is as durable as possible. The three-needle
carburettor uses a 9.5mm inlet to get in as much fuel as possible
and uses a composite body to prevent heat from the engine case
affecting the fuel supply. A huge, black, flow-through finned
heatsink head keeps things cool, and even features a sweet
A dual stage pre-oiled air filter is used to keep dirt and fine
particles of dust from entering the engine. The air filter is
securely mounted on a 90-degree rubber tube so it is placed in the
perfect position and stay in place through any type of
Roto Start 2
Get things going quickly with the Roto Start 2 starting system,
which is pre-installed onto the back of the engine. The Roto Start
2 replaces the standard pullstarter with a handheld shaft-drive
starting unit so you don’t have to deal with pullstarting the
engine by hand. Just install a charged 7.2v stick-pack battery into
the Roto Start 2 hand unit, insert the shaft into the back of the
engine, press the button and you’re off! It really
doesn’t get any easier!

High Quality Radio
The reliable and sturdy HPI TF-3 radio controls the Savage XL,
giving you superb control in a well-designed pistol-grip radio! The
steering wheel design makes you feel as if you’re actually
driving the truck, and the trigger-style throttle and brake
controls provide you with finger-sensitive action when accelerating
and stopping! The radio transmitter features interchangeable
frequency crystals so you can drive with your friends, servo
reverse switches, a retractable aerial with sliding cover, easy
access to radio adjustments and simple AA battery replacement. The
steering for the XL is handled by the new, tougher metal-gear HPI
SF-5 high-torque servo, which has plenty of grunt to turn the front
wheels at low and high speeds, in any sort of terrain. A truck this
size needs the power and torque of a strong servo, and the SF-5 is
just the ticket, providing 8.9kg/cm2 at 6 volts (that’s 126
psi!) of power. To make sure the servos have plenty of juice, the
XL includes an HPI 1200mAh NiMH receiver battery pack and charger.
Recharging is easy with the charging jack built into the radio box
– just remove the rubber plug and insert the charging plug.
The HPI TF-3 radio gives you long-range and reliable communication
with your truck. Finally, if you ever want to upgrade your
electronics you’ll find it extremely easy, because all of the
electronics are standard-size RC components with standardized
connectors. Any or all of the components can be upgraded or
replaced whenever you like, or even moved into a different RC
vehicle in the future. The Savage XL will accept any standard-size
servos and any 4- or 5-cell receiver battery pack.
